High-Functioning, Deeply Exhausted, and Masking as the Black Sheep

You didn’t burn out from life. You burned out from staying palatable, compliant, and small in a family that never made room for you.

Once you accept that you are different in your family and stop trying to convince anyone otherwise, something strange happens. You do not suddenly become softer or quieter or more agreeable. You become sharper in your self-awareness. Grounding in your truth. You keep showing up as yourself, even when it clearly does not land the way the system wants it to. And because you are not willing to disappear anymore, you learn how to function at a very high level to compensate for how the system will no longer support you.

This is where the high-functioning black sheep is born.

Not out of ambition. Not out of ego. Out of necessity. If you are going to exist authentically in a system that sees your difference as a problem, you learn very quickly that you need to be solid. You need to be competent. You need to be unimpeachable, because if anything goes wrong, it will be on you.
